Rough Stuff Rides

Over the past few months the club has been arranging Rough Stuff rides which are a mix of gentle MTB and Road Rides. What you can expect from a Rough Stuff Ride is:

Winter Ruff Stuff Coffee Stop

  • Route distance ranging anywhere from 20 to 40 miles

  • Largely traffic free routes, taking in single track lanes and off road trails

  • A relaxed touring pace - rides usually average around 10mph

  • A midway, bring your own coffee and snacks, stop

  • Cheerful banter and an appreciation of the natural environment

So what are the routes like?

Routes predominantly use quiet back roads, but also take on off road section using byways and bridleways. These sections vary in length and roughness, but nothing too technical. At a rough estimate there will be a 70/30 split between roads/tracks.

What bikes are suitable?

Touring bikes

Mountain bikes

Robust road bikes

Gravel bikes

Some type of bike bag to carry you mid ride drinks and snacks, your puncture protection equipment and any minor maintenance tools would be an advantage. Being self reliant and carrying a range of spares and basic equipment is really important as are good sturdy tyres.

Will I keep up? Will they be too fast?

Rides are ridden at a more gentle touring pace and because of their nature there are plenty of opportunities to stop, regroup, take in the views and drink coffee! Having said that these rides are a good workout, and excellent for honing your bike handling and ride skills, especially on the off road sections.

Where can I find out more?

Details of each weeks ride will be posted on the Club’s Website under Weekly Rides Update and on the WhatsApp group.
